Nakumatt Workers Sue Employer Over Unpaid Salaries

nakumattNakumatt employees have sued their employer over unpaid salaries, not paying them for overtime worked and for not implementing an 11 per cent salary increment as agreed upon in a May 1, 2017 CBA.

The retailer has also suspended payments of pensions, sacco contributions, union dues to relevant agencies, PAYE deductions and private insurance schemes deductions.

The staff has through the Kenya Union of Commercial, Food and Allied Workers presented their petition before the High Court saying: ”We also want pending the hearing and determination of our case, Nakumatt be directed to pay PAYE loans, remit loan, sacco and private insurance scheme deductions, pay union and authorized overtime due deductions.”

The workers had on August 1, 2017 taken to the streets protesting against July salary delays.

The retailer has been going through some tough times as it has been sued by a number of creditors including Thika Road Mall. Nakumatt has not paid TRM 51 million in rent arrears.

The case will be heard in September.
