Nandi County Governor Stephen Sang’ has written to International Criminal Police Organization over ownership of a 2014 drug consignment destroyed at the port of Mombasa.

The consignment, reportedly weighing 370.8 kilograms of heroin and valued at Ksh1.3 billion was destroyed in Mombasa under the supervision of President Uhuru Kenyatta and several state officials.

According to Sang, the letter filed on Thursday by his lawyer Dunstan Omari seeks crucial information that will help him write a response to a defamation suit filed by Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho.

The letter, copied to Cabinet Secretaries Fred Matiang’i (Interior) Raychelle Omamo (Defense), and I.G Joseph Boinnet, also, seeks answers from the state why the owners of the consignment were not revealed.

“On or about 29th August 2014, the State under the supervision of the President, various Cabinet Secretaries, the Inspector General of Police blew up a luxury hatch referred to as Amin Darya or MV Alnoor that had been laden with 370.8 kilograms of heroin valued at Ksh.1.3 billion, this was a bold move to declare war against drugs trafficking,” the letter read in part.

Sang, further, copied the letter to Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) George Kinoti, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Office of the President of the Republic of Kenya as well as the Registrar of the Kenyan Judiciary.

The letter comes weeks, after Sang and other leaders allied to the Jubilee party accused Joho of drug trafficking.

In response, Joho, gave the leaders 24 hours to retract the malicious remarks which he said are meant to tarnish his name and ultimately his political career.

The governor linked Deputy President William Ruto – who he has publicly opposed – to his drug woes.

On February 5, Joho announced that he had sued Governor Sang, legislators Kimani Ichungwa (Kikuyu) and Oscar Sudi (Kapseret) for defamation.
