The New Kenya Planters Cooperative Union (New KPCU PLC), in partnership with the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development, has launched a Coffee Extension Champions Training Programme aimed at increasing coffee production across the country.
The programme is part of the Revival of Coffee Through Cooperative Societies Campaign and targets community-rooted individuals passionate about transforming coffee farming and improving rural livelihoods.
In a notice issued on Tuesday, September 8, 2026, New KPCU said the initiative seeks to increase coffee production within the cooperative movement from the current 51,852 metric tonnes to 151,000 metric tonnes.
The two-week programme will be implemented in selected wards across 31 counties.
The counties are Baringo, Bomet, Bungoma, Busia, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Embu, Homa Bay, Kakamega, Kajiado, Kericho, Kiambu, Kisii, Kisumu, Laikipia, Machakos, Makueni, Meru, Migori, Murang’a, Nairobi, Nakuru, Nandi, Narok, Nyamira, Nyandarua, Nyeri, Siaya, Taita Taveta, Tharaka Nithi, Trans Nzoia and Uasin Gishu.
Selected trainees will undergo two weeks of intensive theoretical and practical training.
The training will be fully sponsored, although successful applicants will be required to cater for their own transport costs.
Upon successful completion of the training, the Extension Champions will provide private extension services to coffee farmers within their respective wards.
They will train farmers on Good Agricultural Practices to help improve coffee yields and support the rehabilitation of abandoned or underperforming coffee farms.
The champions will also promote the adoption of quality planting materials supplied through the programme.
Other responsibilities will include mobilising and organising farmers into cooperatives or farmer groups, helping farmers maintain records, monitoring crops and providing basic farm management support.
New KPCU said the champions will work closely with cooperatives and farmer groups in delivering the services.
“Extension Champions will levy farmers a reasonable service fee agreed upon at the ward level through cooperatives or farmer groups and approved by the Standing County Technical Committee,” the notice reads.
The champions will work with cooperatives to streamline the collection of service fees through cooperative deductions or mobile money payments.
The arrangement is intended to promote transparency and accountability, with the champions encouraged to enter into formal service agreements with cooperatives or farmer groups.
New KPCU said applicants must hold a certificate, diploma or degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Horticulture, Agricultural Economics or a related field.
Applicants must also be residents of the ward they intend to serve and provide proof of residency.
The organisation is seeking individuals who demonstrate a passion for transforming rural livelihoods through sustainable coffee farming.
Applicants should also have effective communication and teamwork skills.
Those who have previously undergone training under the Coffee Extension Champions Programme are not eligible to apply.
Interested applicants are required to submit a detailed curriculum vitae, copies of their academic and professional certificates, a copy of their National Identity Card and proof of ward residency.
Applicants must also provide a brief cover letter indicating the ward they wish to serve.
They are further required to provide telephone contacts for three referees.
New KPCU said interested and qualified applicants should submit their applications in a sealed envelope through the post office, by email or through hand delivery.
