Nyanza has the highest proportion of registered voters in Kenya, according to the latest TIFA Research poll tracking the country’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The survey, dubbed Kenya’s Road to the 2027 General Election and released on July 24, 2026, found that 83 per cent of Kenyans reported that they are registered voters.

Nyanza recorded the highest proportion at 89 per cent, followed by Lower Eastern and Mt Kenya at 86 per cent.

Central Rift came third at 85 per cent, while Northern recorded 84 per cent. Nairobi followed with 83 per cent.

South Rift recorded the lowest proportion of registered voters at 66 per cent.

The findings show significant regional differences in voter registration levels, with a 23-percentage-point gap between Nyanza and South Rift.

However, TIFA cautioned that voter registration figures do not necessarily translate into actual voter turnout.

“Based on past (official) results, voter registration is never a precise indicator of actual voter turnout,” the pollster noted.

The survey also found significant differences in voter registration by age.

Only 72 per cent of Kenyans aged below 35 reported that they were registered voters, compared with 96 per cent among those aged 35 and above.

The pollster also found no significant statistical difference between supporters and opponents of the BBG grouping in terms of voter registration, with the figures standing at 84 per cent and 86 per cent, respectively.

Among Kenyans who said they were not registered as voters, several reasons were cited for their failure to register.

The most common reason was a lack of the required identification documents, cited by 37 per cent of respondents.

Another 22 per cent said they lacked sufficient time to complete the registration process, while a similar proportion said they were not interested in voting or politics.

TIFA also found a significant difference between younger and older Kenyans regarding the reasons for not being registered.

The most notable difference was the lack of identification documents among younger respondents.

According to the poll, 50 per cent of respondents in the youngest age group said they were not registered because they did not have an identification document.

This was nearly five times higher than the proportion recorded among respondents in the oldest age group, at 11 per cent.
