Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o has dismissed remarks by Homa Bay Senator Moses Kajwang’ suggesting that the number of counties in Kenya be reduced.

Speaking recently in Homa Bay, Senator Kajwang’ had proposed that the current 47 counties be trimmed down to at least 13, arguing that the current number was too high.

However, Governor Nyong’o, in a statement shared on social media on Wednesday, strongly disagreed with the proposal, describing it as misguided.

“I don’t think Hon. Kajwang’s idea will help us. It is a knee-jerk reaction of an accountant mesmerised by the game of easy calculation of figures,” Nyong’o said.

The governor noted that during the birth of devolution, there were thorough debates on how many counties were needed to fairly represent and serve the country. He said such reasons should not be forgotten or ignored.

“I suggest that Hon. Kajwang’ should call for a serious discussion involving diverse representatives from different schools of thought, so that this issue can be deliberated upon seriously and resolved in a manner that will benefit the nation,” he added.

Nyong’o said he fully supports the current structure of devolution, noting that it has brought services closer to the people. He said efforts should instead be focused on reviewing what has been achieved and identifying areas of improvement.

“Let us evaluate it, establish what has been achieved, and identify what we could have accomplished after acknowledging some of the shortcomings we might have overlooked,” he said.
