Anders Per-Johan Axelsson, commonly known as P. J. Axelsson, is a Swedish former professional ice hockey player born on February 26, 1975, in Kungälv, Sweden.
Nicknamed “Pebben” in his home country and “Potatoes” in Boston, Axelsson is best known for his 11-season tenure with the NHL’s Boston Bruins from 1997 to 2009, where he was the longest-tenured player at the time of his departure.
A left winger, he was celebrated for his gritty, defensive-minded play and ability to make smart decisions on the ice, earning him a reputation as a reliable two-way forward.
Though not a prolific goal scorer, his work ethic and versatility made him a fan favorite with the Bruins, Frölunda HC of the Swedish Elitserien, and the Swedish national team, Tre Kronor.
After retiring in 2013, Axelsson transitioned into a scouting role with the Bruins, where he currently serves as the European Scouting Coordinator.

P. J. has a younger brother, Anton Axelsson, who is also a professional ice hockey player.
Born on October 16, 1986, in Kungälv, Sweden, Anton followed in his older brother’s footsteps, carving out a career in professional hockey, primarily in Sweden.
Anton played as a forward, much like P. J., and spent significant time with Frölunda HC, the same club where P. J. began his career.
Notably, during the 2011-12 season, Anton played as a center, often alongside P. J., who had returned to Frölunda after his NHL career.
Anton’s career, while not reaching the NHL heights of his brother, included stints in the Swedish Hockey League and other European leagues, showcasing the family’s hockey talent.

Career
Axelsson’s hockey career began in his hometown with Frölunda HC, where he played four seasons in the Swedish Elitserien before being drafted by the Boston Bruins in the 177th overall pick of the 1995 NHL Entry Draft.
He joined the Bruins in 1997, playing all 82 games in his rookie season and helping the team reach the playoffs.
Over his 11 seasons with Boston, Axelsson played 797 games, amassing 103 goals and 184 assists for a total of 287 points.
His defensive prowess, particularly as a penalty killer and shadow for opposing star players, defined his NHL tenure.
During the 2004-05 NHL lockout, Axelsson returned to Frölunda, where he played alongside Daniel Alfredsson and Samuel Påhlsson, leading the team to an Elitserien championship and setting a playoff record for most assists with 10.
After the 2008-09 season, where he helped the Bruins reach the Eastern Conference semifinals, Axelsson signed a four-year contract with Frölunda HC, serving as an alternate captain.
He retired in 2013 and joined the Bruins’ scouting department, contributing to the drafting of Swedish prospects like Axel Andersson in 2018 and Fabian Lysell in 2021.
Accolades
Internationally, Axelsson represented Sweden in 156 games, including 43 World Championship appearances and 12 Olympic games.
His crowning achievement came in 2006 when he won an Olympic gold medal with Sweden at the Turin Winter Olympics.
He also earned bronze medals at the 2001 and 2002 Ice Hockey World Championships and silver medals in 2003 and 2004.
On the club level, Axelsson won an Elitserien championship with Frölunda HC in 2005, where his playoff performance was instrumental.
His 700th NHL game, played on February 21, 2008, in a 5-4 shootout win over the Florida Panthers, marked a significant milestone in his career.
