Pensioner Self-Registration Portal Reopened Until May 10

The government has reopened the pensioner self-registration portal for a final time, giving retirees and their dependants until May 10, 2025, to complete the process.

In a public notice, the National Treasury said the decision follows numerous genuine appeals from pensioners who faced difficulties registering during the earlier window.

“In line with our core values and in response to genuine requests filed during the exception period, we have reopened the pensioner self-registration portal one final time – until May 10, 2025,” the statement read.

“This is to ensure that pensioners who faced challenges during the initial three-month window are not unfairly disadvantaged.”

The Treasury has warned that any pensioner who fails to register by the new deadline risks being removed from the government payroll, which would lead to the suspension of their monthly pension payments. The self-registration exercise is mandatory and affects all retired State Officers, civil servants, teachers who were formerly employed by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), officers from the police, prisons, and National Youth Service (NYS), military personnel, as well as dependants of deceased pensioners.

To complete the process, pensioners or their dependants are required to have a valid email address, an active mobile phone number, a KRA PIN, and an eCitizen account. Additionally, applicants must upload clear scanned PDF copies of key documents. These include the front and back of the National ID, the front side of the ATM card for the bank or SACCO account that receives the pension, and birth certificates for children. If applicable, they must also upload a death certificate for a deceased pensioner and a tax exemption certificate for persons living with disabilities.

The registration process is fully digital and can be completed at any time using a smartphone, desktop, or laptop from any location. To register, one must log in to the eCitizen portal, navigate to the Pensions Department under the National Treasury, and follow the self-registration instructions provided. For those who may require assistance, in-person help is available at Huduma Centres, the Treasury’s Pension Department offices, or through designated registration agents.

The pensioner self-registration portal was launched on December 5, 2024, and remained open until February 28, 2025.

A public notice issued on January 14, 2025, emphasized that all pensioners and dependents receiving monthly payments through the Pensions Department must register before the deadline to avoid disruption.

The current extension until May 10, 2025, is the final opportunity to comply with this directive.
