The government of Uganda has denied claims that they have abandoned  the Standard gauge railway (SGR) connecting the two countries.

Minister of Works and Transport, Monica Azuba said that they do not intend to backtrack on the plan and that everything was still in course. She said that the SGR would reduce the amount of time that goods will be transported from the port of Mombasa to Uganda.

“I want to refute this in strong terms, Uganda is very much on track with the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR). The SGR is very important to our country… it is really to cut down the travel time for our cargo between Mombasa and Kampala,” said Monica Azuba.

She  said that the construction was yet to commence but the deal to finance the said project was in the advanced stages and would be concluded soon.

Ms. Azuba was speaking at the Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) where she had paid a courtesy call.
