There will no longer be a good time to escape breathalyzer tests, otherwise known as alco-blow.

This is after the Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet announced the launch of alco-blow checks even during the day.

The move, he said is aimed at reducing road carnage during the festive season.

“It is really aimed at getting rid of drunks hitting the road early morning while still groggy and not being in full charge of their faculties, hence risk killing themselves, or worse still murdering other innocent people,” the IG said.

Speaking during the recognition awards ceremony for police officers in Nairobi, Boinnet noted that drunkenness is the “single most contributor to reckless driving.”

“People have gotten used to finding alco-blow officers at on the highway at the late hours of the night and by 2 or 3 AM in the morning they are gone, not anymore,” he added.

Officers will not only deal with reckless drivers, but also with pedestrians who do not follow traffic rules.

“People crossing the roads anyhow without observing the traffic rules and imagining the driver has seen them will also be dealt with accordingly,” the IG continued.

The alcoblow gadget has calibrations, and the zero mark indicates no detection of alcohol. Any mark between zero and 0.034 on the calibrator indicates alcohol in the breath but the motorist can safely steer a vehicle. Any reading above this means the driver has impaired judgment.
