Police in Nairobi have recovered a firearm that was reported missing by a police officer more than a week ago, but investigators are seeking to establish the whereabouts of two missing rounds of ammunition.
The weapon was recovered at a Naivas Supermarket branch located at Development House along Moi Avenue in Nairobi’s central business district.
The firearm, a Ceska pistol, had been reported lost on May 25 by Sergeant Amos Kimathi of the Administration Police’s VIP Protection Unit.
The officer stated that he lost the weapon after visiting a barber shop and spa along Mukhtar Daddah Street in the city centre.
Acting on intelligence received from the Nairobi Area Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Regional Headquarters, officers from DCI Central, led by the Deputy Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer, proceeded to the supermarket where the firearm was traced.
Investigators found the pistol concealed inside a Carrefour-branded carrier bag that had been stuffed inside two additional carrier bags alongside some fruits at the supermarket’s luggage holding area.
Police said the firearm was recovered in its holster together with its magazine. However, upon examination, the magazine contained 13 rounds of 9mm ammunition, two rounds fewer than the 15 rounds that had initially been reported missing with the weapon.
A review of CCTV footage reportedly revealed that on May 28 at around 1:37 p.m., an unidentified individual whose face was concealed left the bag containing the firearm at the luggage storage area before departing.
Crime Scene Investigators processed the scene and secured the firearm as evidence. Detectives are now working to identify the person captured on CCTV and to determine what happened to the two missing rounds of ammunition.
The recovered firearm has been placed in safe custody pending further investigations and police action.
According to police, the officer said the firearm went missing on May 21, 2026.
The officer told investigators that he had visited a barber shop and spa along Moktar Daddah Street at around 4pm where he requested a complimentary massage.
He reportedly removed his Ceska pistol and placed it under a cushion pillow before the massage session began.
The officer later felt dizzy and decided to rest at the spa. When he woke up at around 11pm, he discovered that the firearm was missing.
He said he made efforts to search for the weapon but failed to recover it before formally reporting the matter on May 25.
Police visited the scene but the firearm had not been recovered by the time of the report.
Staff at the facility were interrogated as part of the probe into the incident.
There were fears the weapon will be used to commit crimes elsewhere. Police said they were reviewing security cameras in the area as part of the probe into the incident.
