Prosecution urges court to hold Obado, co-accused accountable for Sharon Otieno’s murder

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) urged the Milimani High Court to find former Migori Governor Zacharia Okoth Obado and two others guilty for the murder of university student Sharon Otieno.

In submissions before the court today, Prosecution, led by Senior Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Gikui Gichuhi, presented a compelling case demonstrating a coordinated plot and joint criminal enterprise that led to the death in 2018.

“The evidence paints a coherent picture of the accused acting in concert, with a shared intention to eliminate Sharon Otieno and silence witness (XYZ) to avoid political fallout, reputational harm, and embarrassment to Governor Obado,” Gichuhi told the court.

Further, Prosecution established that Michael Juma Oyamo and Casper Ojwang Obiero, the co-accused in this murder case, acted as trusted operatives in the scheme.

They were present at Graca Hotel on the evening of 3rd September 2018 when the deceased and XYZ were abducted.

The vehicle used, registration number KCL 418K, is registered to Obiero’s wife and driven by a longtime associate.

Gichuhi walked the court through extensive evidence, including witness testimony, cybercrime reports, phone analyses, and forensic investigations, all pointing conclusively to the accused.

“From the start, we committed to showing the court that the evidence, like pieces of a puzzle, form a complete picture of the events that led to Sharon’s tragic death,” she said.

Prosecution dismissed the defence as inconsistent and constructed on afterthoughts designed to mislead, noting that no reasonable doubt exists.

The DPP has charged the ex-county boss, Oyamo and Obiero with murdering Sharon Otieno and the court has since ruled that the trio have a case to answer.

The court will meet on March 18, 2026 to announce the judgement date.
