The body of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga has arrived at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, where thousands of mourners have gathered to pay their last respects.
Crowds that had escorted Raila’s remains from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) filled the stadium, waving twigs, singing.
Some leaders were seen present at Kasarani earlier.
The public viewing was earlier moved from Parliament Buildings to Kasarani Stadium following an overwhelming turnout in Nairobi. Officials said the decision was made after huge crowds gathered along the route from JKIA and outside Parliament, making it difficult to maintain order.
“The viewing of the body of H.E. Hon. Raila Amolo Odinga has been moved from Parliament Buildings to Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani. Members of the public are advised to proceed to Kasarani where they shall have enough space and time to view the body,” ODM Director of Communication Philip Etale said in a statement.
The planned procession to Lee Funeral Home before public viewing was also cancelled.
Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who was among leaders at the scene, urged the emotional crowd to remain calm and respectful as they waited to view the body.
“Baba is too big for Parliament. We have decided to take him to Kasarani,” said Budget and Appropriations Committee member Samuel Atandi.
Reports indicate that the public viewing scheduled for Moi Stadium in Kisumu has also been moved to Jomo Kenyatta Stadium in Mamboleo to accommodate large crowds expected there.
According to the burial committee, today will be the only day Nairobi residents will have a chance to view the body before it is taken to Kisumu and later to Bondo, Siaya County.
Raila’s remains arrived at JKIA on Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. aboard a Kenya Airways flight from Mumbai, India. President William Ruto led senior government officials in receiving the body before it was taken to Lee Funeral Home for preservation.
The official burial programme released by the National Funeral Committee outlines a four-day farewell — from Thursday, October 16, to Sunday, October 19, 2025.
A State Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 17, at Nyayo National Stadium starting at 8:00 a.m., followed by an overnight vigil at his Karen residence. On Saturday, the body will be flown to Kisumu for public viewing before proceeding to his rural home in Bondo for burial on Sunday.
