Former Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) Mombasa chapter chairperson Rukia Rashid snubbed a handing over ceremony to welcome her successor Mohamed Ramadhan Mustafa.

According to those present, Rukia arrived late for the ceremony forcing the newly elected team to wait patiently for her.

When journalists were ushered in to cover the function, Rukia received a call on her cell phone and walked out of the venue leaving her handbag behind.

As journalists were setting up their cameras ready for the ceremony Rukia came back, hurriedly picked her handbag and walked away.

The entire ceremony was brought to a halt as those in the room watched in disbelief as she majestically walked out. Mustafa, his vice chairperson Jacqueline Waihenya who is an advocate of the high court and chamber directors were left speechless.

Mustafa was at the receiving end as journalists demanded to know why they were invited to a handing over ceremony which was not happening.

He downplayed the fiasco saying there was a change of plan and that was why Rukia just slipped out of the ceremony.

Earlier this month, during the chapter’s annual general meeting held at Castle Royal hotel in Mombasa county, Rukia lost the seat to her vice chairman Mustafa.

Mustafa had trounced the incumbent by 85 votes to 20 to be declared the winner in an election carried out by the KNCCI independent electoral board chairman Benjamin Onkoba amid tension.

The voting was done through the secret ballot from 8am to mid day.
