President William Ruto arrived in Addis Ababa to participate in the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union (AU) Assembly, taking place amid global economic uncertainty and shifting geopolitical dynamics.

The high-level summit has brought together African Heads of State and Government to set continental priorities and accelerate the implementation of African Union’s development blueprint, Agenda 2063.

As AU Champion for Institutional Reform, President Ruto is expected to present a progress report outlining measures aimed at strengthening the Union’s effectiveness, credibility, and financial sustainability. The reform process seeks to enhance accountability, streamline operations, and reduce overreliance on external funding.

The President will also chair the Committee of African Heads of State and Government on Climate Change (CAHOSCC), where he will table a report reinforcing Africa’s common position on climate action.

The discussions are expected to focus on climate adaptation, resilience-building, and mobilising adequate climate finance to support vulnerable African economies facing the effects of global warming.

In addition, Ruto will chair the inaugural meeting of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) Committee, underscoring Kenya’s commitment to deeper regional integration and expanded intra-African trade under the African Continental Free Trade Area framework.

The AfCFTA seeks to create the world’s largest free trade area by connecting 54 African countries into a single market for goods and services, boosting industrialisation and economic growth across the continent.

On the margins of the summit, President Ruto is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings aimed at advancing partnerships in trade, investment, health, and security.

He is also expected to mobilise support for Kenya’s national transformation agenda, including infrastructure expansion, agro-industrial development backed by increased irrigation, and energy security initiatives.

Other global leaders and international partners are attending the summit, which is expected to shape Africa’s collective response to emerging global challenges while advancing continental unity and economic resilience.
