Six Iranians in Mombasa court over Sh8 billion drug trafficking claims

Six Iranian nationals accused of trafficking narcotic drugs valued at approximately Sh8 billion were presented in a court on Monday.

The six, Jasem Darzadeh Nia, Nadeem Jadgal, Imran Baloch, Hassan Baloch, Rahim Baksh, and Imtiyaz Daryayi, were arraigned before the Shanzu Law Courts.

The suspects were arrested on October 24, 2025 at Kilindini Port, following a multi-agency operation that led to the seizure of 769 packages of crystalline substances suspected to be synthetic narcotic drugs, weighing 1,035.986 kilograms.

The operation followed intelligence shared by the Kenya Navy on a suspicious “dark vessel” operating in the Indian Ocean without proper identification.

Prosecution sought more time to verify the credentials of the court interpreter.

Prosecution also requested the appointment of an independent interpreter to ensure fair proceedings.

The prosecution is expected to apply for the suspects’ continued detention for 30 days to allow investigators to complete inquiries into the alleged offences under Section 4(a)(ii) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (Control) Act, 1994.

The magistrate ordered the suspects to remain in custody at the Port Police Station pending further directions on Tuesday, October, 28, 2025.

The seizure of the narcotics has raised concerns over if this was the first such consignment to come to the region and its intended destination.

Officials said the seizure came after a tip off from the Americans who had been trailing the movements of the narcotics.

In what could be one of East Africa’s biggest drug busts in years, a multi-agency operation involving the Kenya Navy, Kenya Coast Guard, and NACADA has seized methamphetamine worth Sh8.2 billion and arrested six Iranian nationals who were ferrying the consignment.
