    Early Life

Born on July 8, 1972, in Behala, Calcutta (now Kolkata), West Bengal, Sourav Ganguly hails from an affluent family. His father, Chandidas Ganguly, was a prominent businessman who owned a successful printing business, making him one of the richest men in the city. From an early age, Sourav was introduced to cricket by his elder brother, Snehasish Ganguly, which ignited his passion for the sport. Despite his family’s initial reluctance, Ganguly pursued cricket and rapidly rose through the ranks, excelling in state and school-level tournaments.

Rise to Stardom and International Success

Ganguly made his international debut for India in 1992 but truly announced himself on the world stage with a stunning Test debut at Lord’s in 1996, where he scored a magnificent century. His elegant left-handed batting and fearless approach made him a key player for India. Over the years, he cemented his reputation as one of the most successful captains in Indian cricket history.

With over 11,000 runs in One Day Internationals (ODIs), Ganguly remains the fifth-highest run-scorer in the format. He was also the second Indian batsman, after Sachin Tendulkar, to cross the 10,000-run mark in ODIs. His contributions led Wisden to rank him the sixth greatest ODI batsman of all time, alongside legends such as Viv Richards, Brian Lara, and Michael Bevan.

However, his tenure was not without controversies. His fallout with then-coach Greg Chappell in 2005 made headlines, leading to his temporary removal from the team.

In 2008, Ganguly was named captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the inaugural IPL season, a franchise co-owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. While his IPL career had its ups and downs, his association with the league bolstered his earnings significantly.
