    Steve Scalise is a prominent American politician affiliated with the Republican Party.

    Born Stephen Joseph Scalise on October 6, 1965, in New Orleans, Louisiana, he has established himself as a key figure in national politics.

    He currently serves as the House Majority Leader, representing Louisiana’s 1st congressional district since 2008.

    A native of Jefferson Parish, Scalise graduated from Archbishop Rummel High School and earned a degree in computer science from Louisiana State University, with a minor in political science.

    His Italian heritage traces back to great-grandparents who immigrated to the United States in the late 1800s.

    He is married to Jennifer Letulle since 2005, and they have two children, Madison and Harrison.

    Steve is one of three children born to Alfred Joseph Scalise, a real estate broker who passed away in 2015, and Carol Schilleci, who died in 1999.

    His siblings are Glenn Scalise and Tara Scalise.

    Career

    Scalise began his political journey in the Louisiana state legislature, where he served from 1996 to 2008, including time in both the Louisiana House of Representatives and the Louisiana State Senate.

    In 2008, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives for Louisiana’s 1st district, succeeding Bobby Jindal.

    Over the years, he rose through Republican leadership ranks, chairing the conservative House Republican Study Committee from 2013 to 2014.

    He then served as House Majority Whip from 2014 to 2018 and as House Minority Whip from 2019 to 2023.

    In 2023, his colleagues elected him House Majority Leader, the second-highest position in House Republican leadership, a role he continues to hold.

    Scalise is known for advocating fiscal discipline, lower taxes, strong national defense, border security, and conservative values.

    He has been a staunch defender of Louisiana’s interests, particularly coastal restoration efforts, leading the passage of the RESTORE Act in 2012.

    A notable moment in his career came in 2017 when he was critically wounded during a shooting at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia.

    Accolades

    Scalise has received high marks from organizations such as the Club for Growth, which named him a Defender of Economic Freedom with strong lifetime scores for supporting economic freedom and fiscal responsibility.

    The Associated Builders and Contractors honored him as a Champion of the Merit Shop for his advocacy on workforce and construction issues.

    His leadership roles, including becoming the first Louisianian since Hale Boggs to serve as majority whip, underscore his influence within the Republican Party.
