Controversial Kenyan film, Rafiki missed out on Oscars nomination soon after the court temporarily lifted the ban to allow the film air in commercial cinemas.

The film was to be submitted in the Best Foreign Language Film category, for next year’s Oscar Awards.

Another Kenyan film, Supa Modo, however bagged a nomination in the same category.

The High Court temporarily lifted the ban of Rafiki, to allow it to be aired in commercial cinemas for seven days so it could qualify for the Oscars.

The film sold out at the Prestige Plaza’s Anga Cinema, forcing the management to add screening hours.

KFCB Boss, Ezekiel Mutua was disappointed when the court lifted the ban and had a few things to say after the film missed a nomination spot at the Oscars Awards.

Through his Facebook, Mutua posted his two cents on the downfall of the film, for failing to obtain a nomination,

“These foreign agencies know that they can’t sell this crap in Rwanda, Uganda or Tanzania. They have set camp in Kenya and were buying free tickets and distributing them in the streets for people to go watch RAFIKI,” he said.

Ezekiel continued: “While gay people have a right to dignity and should be treated as human beings deserving of respect, they should keep their gay practices to themselves, Government regulates the public space, including exhibition of content.”

He went ahead to congratulate Supa Modo for getting a nomination in the category of Best Foreign Language Film.

The movie recently won the Best Indigenous Language Movie at the 6th annual African Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA).
