Residents of Thika town had a slight scare this morning after an old woman found what looked like a man-made bomb inside her shop along Uhuru Street.

The gadget was discovered wrapped inside animal-skin products.

Police were alerted of the incident and arrived at the scene a few minutes later where residents identified a young man as the one who left the gadget in the shop.

Thika Administration Police Commandant, Peter Nzimbi says the police have in their custody a young man, identified as Abel Githinji, as the one who left the power circuit inside the shop.

Mr Githinji defended himself saying that he had carried the device for repair but found the electrician’s shop closed. He then decided to leave it at the old lady’s shop and go to work.

The police confirmed that the gadget was not an explosive and urged residents to continue reporting any suspicious characters.

Security officers have asked Kenyans to remain vigilant during the Holy month of Ramadhan over possible terrorist attacks.

“Though the capability of Al-Shabaab has been greatly downgraded over time, we have credible intelligence suggesting that the militia group is planning to carry out further attacks in the country,” director of communications for the National Police Service Charles Owino said.
