Three people died and at least 19 others injured following a road traffic accident involving a car in health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale’s motorcade at Otonglo near the Molasses Plant in Kisumu.
Duale was not injured in the accident.
One of the cars in the motorcade of Duale was involved in the accident on Sunday while he was travelling from Rarieda to Kisumu International Airport.
The accident involved a four-wheel-drive in the motorcade with his security, a tuktuk and a matatu.
The matatu is said to have been trying to overtake when it collided with the Duale security team and the tuktuk. The deceased were in the tuktuk while the injured were in the matatu, police said.
The injured were rushed to the hospital.
According to the Ministry of Health, the Cabinet Secretary immediately mobilised an emergency medical response to assist the victims.
Rescue efforts were quickly coordinated at the scene, leading to the evacuation of more than 19 injured people to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital for urgent medical treatment.
Two people were confirmed dead at the scene of the crash, while another victim succumbed to injuries while being rushed to hospital, police said.
Emergency responders, local authorities and medical teams worked swiftly to rescue victims and ensure the injured received prompt medical attention.
Police said they were investigating the incident.
The accident affected traffic flow on the busy road.
The CS was among those who had attended a presidential event in Siaya where health Principal Secretary Ouma Oluga was hosting a thanksgiving event.
Duale proceeded with his trip to another event where he spoke on the accident.
Speaking after the incident in Nairobi on Sunday night during an Iftar dinner with members of the Kenya Association of Muslim Medical Professionals (KAMMP), Duale said he briefly delayed his journey to ensure the injured were assisted and taken to the hospital.
“Sorry for keeping you waiting; we are on our way from the function to Kisumu airport. There was a small accident. All patients belong to me; I had to tell my team to help the patients and ensure they are in the hospital. They are recovering well,” he said.
The CS added that the injured victims were rushed to hospital and are recovering well following the crash.
The Ministry of Health conveyed its condolences to the families who lost their loved ones and wished those receiving treatment a quick recovery.
