Police are investigating an incident where three workers were injured after a group of armed assailants attacked a gold processing site in Suna West Sub-County, Migori County.

The assailants fled the scene with approximately five bags of gold-bearing carbon, whose value has not yet been established.

The robbery with violence incident occurred on April 3, 2026, at around 4:13 a.m. at a site.

Police officers who responded to the scene established that unknown attackers armed with crude weapons gained entry by breaking a chain fastening a temporary gate made of timber and corrugated iron sheets before storming the leaching site.

The gang then attacked workers at the site, injuring three of them in the process.

This is the latest such incident to happen at the sites amid calls for protection from such gangs.

Some site managers have gone as far as hiring armed police officers for their protection.

Gold mining businesses are turning lucrative in the area hence the rise in crime and need for more protection.

And a 27-year-old man died following a suffocation incident inside a gold mining shaft in Nyatike Sub-County, Migori County.

The incident occurred on April 3, 2026, at around 5:50 p.m. at a mining site in the Mikei area.

Police officers who visited the scene found the body of the deceased, identified as Victor Owino, lying outside the shaft.

Preliminary investigations revealed that seven miners had been working inside the shaft when a machine malfunction led to oxygen depletion, causing them to suffocate.

Rescue efforts were mounted, and several miners were pulled out alive and rushed to Migori County Referral Hospital in fair condition.

The body of the deceased was moved to the Migori County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination.

Authorities have launched investigations into the incident, with safety concerns in artisanal mining operations once again coming into focus.

Such incidents at gold mining sites have been on the rise amid calls for protection of the workers at large.
