Boxing fans experienced an electrifying night of action on Friday as George Onyango faced off against Benjamin Mchunguzi in the highly anticipated main event of “Nightmare in Nairobi,” held at Masshouse Arena.

The event drew a packed crowd and delivered a thrilling fight card that showcased some of the finest boxing talent in the region.

The evening kicked off with an exciting opening fight featuring Brian Acholo against Mlati in the welterweight division.

The card also included seven-time champion Abdi Beshr, who triumphed over Edbilious Respectious in the super flyweight category.

Other notable matchups included Arijan Goricki versus Hassan Ndonga in featherweight, Sam Kogluk against Otieno Owenge in super middleweight, and Martin Achebi battling Mubaraka Sseguya in another welterweight contest.

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, Kenyan rap sensation Khaligraph Jones entertained fans with a live performance, further elevating the energy in the arena.

After his victory, super flyweight winner Abdi Beshr credited his experience and endurance for his success. “I have the experience and I have the speed to last long in the ring,” Beshr stated. “My opponent had more power, but he didn’t have as much experience to last the full fight.”

Marvin Obuya, Head of Boxing at Kalakoda Promotions, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support from fans. “The best part of putting this event together is how the fans turn up for the fights,” he said. “It shows the love that the people have for the sport.”

Kenya Professional Boxing Commission (KPBC) Chairman Reuben Ndolo highlighted the importance of boxing in creating opportunities for young people. “At the end of the day, our young kids who don’t have jobs are the ones we want to benefit and have a good living,” Ndolo remarked. “That’s why we are working hard day and night to make sure boxing in Kenya comes back to where it used to be.”

The headline clash between George Onyango and Tanzanian fighter Benjamin Mchunguzi lived up to expectations, captivating fans throughout all 10 rounds. Both fighters displayed remarkable resilience, with Mchunguzi mounting a spirited challenge in the final rounds.

Ultimately, Onyango’s composure, technique, and consistency earned him the victory, crowning him as the king of the super welterweight division in East and Central Africa.

With yet another successful edition of “Nightmare in Nairobi,” boxing fans eagerly anticipate future Kalakoda Promotions events, which continue to play a significant role in revitalizing and developing boxing in Kenya.
