Police are looking for a gang of two that attacked and seriously injured a bodaboda rider using a hammer before robbing him of his motorcycle in Lessos area, Nandi County.

The rider told police that two men approached him at Moi University area and requested to be taken to Lolidunga livestock auction market on Tuesday morning.

On reaching the Kimwogi area, one of the pillion passengers requested that rider stops, as he wanted to respond to a call of nature.

The rider branched to a feeder road and stopped to allow him complete the mission oblivious of the dangers lying ahead.

The other one who remained on the bodaboda removed a hammer from his jacket and hit the rider on the head destabilizing him.

He was later joined by his accomplice who grabbed the motorcycle and rode off leaving the victim on the scene.

Other pedestrians found the rider immobilized and took him to the local police station and later to the hospital.

A hunt on the two men is ongoing, police said.

Such cases where riders lose their motorcycles have been on the rise amid calls for caution on the pillion passengers picked up.

Police say some of the stolen motorcycles are taken to different towns after being configured and sold to unsuspecting buyers.

An investigation is ongoing to get to the bottom of the saga.

Past investigations have seen dozens of motorcycles believed to have been stolen elsewhere recovered.

Others are sold to buyers in the neighbouring countries, police say citing a cartel behind the trend.

Police say the cases are pending under investigations while some are in courts.
