    Early Life

Tinchy Stryder was born on September 14, 1986, in Accra, Ghana. His family later moved to the United Kingdom in 1995, where he grew up in Bow, London.

He attended St Bonaventure’s Catholic School in nearby Forest Gate. After completing his schooling, he went on to study at the University of East London, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Digital Arts, Moving Image and Animation.

Stryder began making music at a young age. By age 11, he was already experimenting with rap and songwriting, and by his teenage years he had become involved in London’s underground grime music scene.

    Early Music Career

Tinchy Stryder’s recordings date back to the late 1990s when he performed on pirate radio stations alongside rising grime artists such as Dizzee Rascal and Wiley.

In the early 2000s, he joined the grime collective Ruff Sqwad, a production group that played an important role in shaping the early grime sound.

He also became part of the influential grime collective Roll Deep, which was founded by Wiley. The group helped popularize grime music across the UK and contributed to the genre’s rise in mainstream popularity.

His stage name “Tinchy Stryder” comes partly from the video game Strider and partly from the nickname “Tinchy,” referencing his relatively short height.

He achieved major mainstream success with his second album Catch 22, which produced several popular singles.

One of the biggest hits from the album was Number 1, a collaboration with the hip-hop trio N-Dubz. The song reached number one on the UK Singles Chart, becoming one of the defining hits of his career.

In 2006, Stryder also launched a clothing brand called Star in the Hood, inspired by his stage identity.

He further expanded into publishing through Takeover/Cloud 9, a joint venture with EMI Music Publishing.

In 2012, he entered the consumer electronics market by launching Goji Electronics, producing headphones, speakers, and accessories for smartphones and computers. A portion of the brand’s profits was donated to charitable causes.
