    Career

Newton started his collegiate journey at East Carolina University, where he quickly established himself as a talented young player.

During his freshman year, he broke the Pirates’ program record for assists in a season by a freshman, showcasing his exceptional passing ability from an early age.

Over his three seasons at East Carolina, Newton continued to grow as a player, improving his scoring, rebounding, and playmaking skills.

This impressive performance earned him a spot on the All-American Athletic Conference (AAC) second team, recognizing him as one of the top players in the conference.

After his successful stint at East Carolina, Newton decided to transfer to the University of Connecticut (UConn), joining the Huskies for his senior season.

At UConn, he became an integral part of the team, contributing significantly to their success.

Newton’s versatility and leadership were key factors in helping the Huskies win two NCAA championships during his time there.

He also achieved multiple triple-doubles, setting new program records and cementing his legacy at UConn.

His impressive college career caught the attention of NBA scouts, leading to his selection by the Indiana Pacers with the 49th overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft.

However, he was waived by the Pacers shortly after the draft.

This contract allows him to split his time between the Timberwolves and their NBA G League affiliate, the Iowa Wolves.

    Accolades

Newton has accumulated numerous accolades throughout his college career, particularly during his time at the University of Connecticut (UConn).

He was awarded the 2024 Bob Cousy Award, recognizing him as the nation’s top point guard.

Newton was also named a Consensus First Team All-American for the 2023-2024 season, further solidifying his reputation as one of the best players in college basketball.

Newton’s achievements in the NCAA tournament were equally impressive.

He earned the NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player award in 2024, following UConn’s back-to-back NCAA championships.

Additionally, he was named the BIG EAST Tournament MVP and Associated Press BIG EAST Player of the Year in 2024.
