A Nairobi Chief Magistrate’s Court released two employees of Equity Bank Kenya Limited, who are accused of stealing Sh4 million from their employer, on bail.
Elijah Ndungu Gachanja, a Relationship Officer Operations, and Kevin Omato Manwa, a Relationship Supervisor Customer Service, appeared before Principal Magistrate Rose Ndubi facing charges of conspiracy to commit a felony and stealing by a servant.
According to the charge sheet, the accused allegedly conspired to steal the funds on or before November 3 and are further accused of stealing Sh4 million from Equity Bank’s Westlands Branch on November 3, 2025.
The money was reportedly in their possession due to their employment at the bank’s Githurai Branch.
During the bail hearing, the defence argued for lenient cash bail, saying that both accused have fixed addresses, are committed to attending court as required, and had already suffered a violation of their rights when they were held for over 72 hours without being presented before court.
It was also alleged that their employment at Equity Bank has not been terminated.
The prosecution did not object to bail but urged the court to balance the rights of the accused with those of the victim.
Magistrate Ndubi released the duo on a cash bail of Sh1 million or an alternative cash bail of Sh400,000.
The matter will be mentioned on November 28 for pre-trial purposes.
And a Nairobi court released a middle-aged man on bail after he denied defrauding a hotel of millions of shillings.
Kelvin Obondo Odhiambo, also known as Hon. Nyalik Oselu, appeared before Ndubi, where he was charged that between November 28, 2024, and March 3, 2025, at Gem Suites Hotel in Nairobi, Odhiambo incurred debts for accommodation services worth Sh3.12 million.
He is also accused of consuming alcoholic drinks, water, and foodstuffs valued at Sh2.413 million, bringing the total debt to Sh5.533 million.
Prosecutors allege that Odhiambo falsely represented that he was able to pay for the services, a fact he knew to be untrue.
Magistrate Ndubi released him on a bond of Sh1 million, with an alternative cash bail of Sh400,000.
The matter will be mentioned on November 19 for pre-trial proceedings.
