At least two people were killed in a stampede at the residence of Busia governor Paul Otuoma in Matayos area.

Police said 11 others were injured in the chaos as a mob waited to get into the governor’s residence for a Christmas token on December 23, 2025.

It is not clear if the governor was present at that time.

Police said a stampede broke out at the gate leaving 13 people injured. Two of them died.

The deceased were identified as Cecilia Aluwo Musumba, 81 and John Barasa Wanyama, 67.

The other group was admitted at the Matayos Sub County with various injuries.

Police said a crowd of more than 2,000 had turned up at the site. Police visited the scene and documented it as part of ongoing investigations into the tragedy. The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other procedures.

A number of politicians have been hosting delegations at various places for Christmas tokens. This posed a security challenge as the crowds turned violent and uncontrollable leading to chaos.

Meanwhile, there were protests in Nairobi’s Embakasi Villa after a man died in a stampede as a group desperately struggled to recover valuables from a site that was being demolished.

Tractors had arrived at the site to demolish structures for construction of affordable housing when the owners rushed there to save their belongings and also remove what was deemed valuable for reuse.

Some had moved out of the structures.

Police said a man died after being trampled on by a mob in the confusion.

The body was moved to the mortuary after a confrontation between locals and police who said they were opposed to the project.

Police said they are investigating the incident.

And in Nyahururu Town, a 40-year-old woman was found dead in her house. The discovery of the death of the woman was made on December 23, 2025 long after she had died. She was identified as Hanna Wamucii Kagure. Her minor aged three was heard crying from the house for long prompting the neighbours to go and check on her. It was then that the body of Kagure was found lying on the floor unresponsive.

It is not clear what caused the death. Police said the woman’s family had a history of blood pressure. The body was moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.
