Early Life
Tyler Robert Joseph was born on December 1, 1988, in Columbus, Ohio, to Kelly Joseph, a mathematics teacher, and Chris Joseph, a basketball coach. He grew up alongside his siblings, Zack, Jay, and Madison, and was homeschooled for much of his childhood.
Before pursuing music professionally, Joseph was an accomplished basketball player and competed alongside future Twenty One Pilots bassist Nick Thomas. He even received an opportunity to play college basketball but ultimately chose to focus on music instead.
His early musical influences included Christian rock, particularly the group DC Talk, while his songwriting would later draw inspiration from alternative rock, hip-hop, pop, and electronic music.
In 2007, Joseph launched a YouTube channel called SlushieGuys, where he posted comedy videos and creative content, building an online following before his music career took off.
Early Music Career
Before Twenty One Pilots gained national recognition, Joseph independently recorded a solo album titled “No Phun Intended.” Recorded largely in his parents’ basement during his senior year of high school, the project showcased his songwriting and experimental musical style.
Although never officially released commercially, the album became a fan favorite and remains an important part of his musical journey.
Founding Twenty One Pilots
In 2009, Joseph formed Twenty One Pilots with friends Nick Thomas and Chris Salih in Columbus, Ohio.
The trio independently released their self-titled debut album later that year and began touring throughout Ohio, steadily building a loyal fan base.
Following the departure of Thomas and Salih in 2011, drummer Josh Dun joined the group, and Twenty One Pilots officially became a duo—a lineup that continues today.
The pair released “Regional at Best” independently before signing with Fueled by Ramen in 2012.
Breakthrough with Vessel
The band’s major-label debut, “Vessel” (2013), introduced Twenty One Pilots to a wider audience.
The album featured several breakthrough singles, including:
- “Holding On to You”
- “Car Radio”
- “House of Gold”
- “Guns for Hands”
Supported by extensive touring, Vessel established the duo as one of the fastest-rising acts in alternative music.

Global Success with Blurryface
Joseph’s biggest commercial breakthrough came with the release of “Blurryface” in 2015.
The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and produced several global hits, including:
- “Stressed Out”
- “Ride”
- “Tear in My Heart”
- “Lane Boy”
- “Fairly Local”
As the band’s principal songwriter, Joseph wrote lyrics that resonated with millions of fans by exploring themes such as anxiety, self-doubt, faith, and personal growth.
Blurryface became one of the defining alternative albums of the decade and propelled Twenty One Pilots to worldwide stardom.
Grammy Award
In 2017, Joseph and Josh Dun won the Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Stressed Out.”
The duo attracted worldwide attention by accepting the award in their underwear—a humorous promise they had made years earlier if they ever won a Grammy.
Since then, Twenty One Pilots has continued releasing successful albums, including:
- “Trench” (2018)
- “Scaled and Icy” (2021)
- “Clancy” (2024)
Each project has been supported by sold-out international tours that have significantly contributed to Joseph’s earnings.
Songwriting
Outside of Twenty One Pilots, Joseph has collaborated with several artists and participated in various creative projects.
He has contributed music to church worship albums, collaborated with rapper Jocef, and provided backing vocals for projects by other musicians.
Joseph also appeared in the independent mockumentary “The (Moderately Inspiring Tale of the) Longboard Rodeo Tango” and has remained involved in charitable initiatives throughout his career.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Twenty One Pilots released “Level of Concern,” with proceeds supporting Crew Nation, a charity that assists live music crews affected by concert shutdowns.
Personal Life
Joseph became engaged to Jenna Black in 2014, and the couple married in March 2015.
They welcomed their first daughter, Rosie, in 2020. During the 2021 MTV Video Music Awards, Joseph announced that the couple was expecting their second child while performing on stage. They have since expanded their family while maintaining a relatively private personal life.
Despite his international fame, Joseph has remained closely connected to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, where much of Twenty One Pilots’ identity was formed.
Awards
As the creative force behind Twenty One Pilots, Joseph has received numerous accolades, including:
- Grammy Award for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance
- American Music Awards
- Billboard Music Award nominations
- MTV Video Music Award nominations
- Alternative Press Music Awards
The duo has also accumulated billions of global streams and consistently ranks among the world’s highest-grossing touring alternative rock acts.
