Manchester United are reportedly targeting Bruno Guimaraes as a potential replacement for Casemiro, with the Red Devils seeking a midfielder capable of replicating the Brazilian’s impact.

Guimaraes, who has established himself as one of Newcastle United’s standout performers, tops United’s shortlist due to his ability to adapt seamlessly to the Premier League. Sources from UOL report that representatives from Manchester United have met with Guimaraes’ agents to explore the possibility of a transfer, a claim supported by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The deal is considered financially feasible, with reports suggesting a fee of around £60 million ($80 million) could secure the midfielder. Newcastle’s uncertain situation—particularly the potential failure to qualify for European football—may make the Brazilian more open to a move.

United are also monitoring Italy international Sandro Tonali, who could be tempted by a switch if Newcastle’s season continues to falter. Currently ninth in the Premier League and recently humbled 7-2 by Barcelona in the Champions League, Newcastle may struggle to retain their star players if they miss out on European competition next season.

While Guimaraes remains the primary target, United are exploring backup options. Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, who has impressed under Thomas Tuchel and in the England setup, has emerged as an alternative. Despite Forest’s struggles near the relegation zone, Anderson is attracting attention from multiple clubs, including Manchester City.

Who will replace Casemiro at Man Utd?

The Brazilian, 34, announced in January that he would leave the club when his £350,000-a-week contract expires.

Despite his strong performances this season, United concluded they would not offer a new deal to the former Real Madrid midfielder, who will be available on a free transfer.

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe previously voiced incredulity about Casemiro’s £18.2m annual salary, and the 73-year-old has vowed to drive down costs.

That was thought to be behind the decision not to trigger the option on Casemiro’s contract, with United wanting to make the decision early to allow them to continue with their long-term squad overhaul.

Casemiro asked for the news to be made public in order to avoid any confusion towards the end of the season.

However, since then, Casemiro has turned in a series of excellent performances.

Captain Bruno Fernandes and defender Leny Yoro both said after the game they hoped Casemiro would remain at the club.

However, sources  told BBC Sport that the club have no plans to reassess their decision.

Interim head coach Michael Carrick has also suggested there will be no U-turn on Casemiro’s future at Old Trafford.

“When something is decided it makes it a little bit easier and everyone understands the situation,” said Carrick.

“The impact he’s had has been terrific, through his influence within the team and with big moments and goals.

“There was a nice moment at the end with the supporters. He’ll enjoy that one.”
