Nyandarua County is set to have its first fully-fledged university following President William Ruto’s announcement that the government has officially gazetted its establishment.

The institution is expected to begin admitting students by September this year.

Speaking in Ol Kalou Town during his third-day tour of the Mt. Kenya region, President Ruto confirmed that the government had given the green light for the transformation of Nyandarua University College into a full university.

“On Friday, I authorised the establishment of Nyandarua University, and this has now been gazetted. You will have a university in this county starting September this year,” said Ruto.

The head of state noted that the decision was made after local leaders requested the elevation of the institution.

“Students will be formally accepted by September. This came after your leaders approached me on the same,” he added.

Nyandarua University College initially operated as a constituent college of the University of Nairobi.

The Commission for University Education (CUE) conducted a technical inspection of the institution on January 28, 2025, paving the way for its full accreditation.

The announcement marks the culmination of a decade-long effort to establish a university in the county. The idea was first proposed in 2014 when local leaders identified higher education as a key driver for regional development.
