Dr. Benard William Chitunga will be officially installed as the second Chancellor of the Co-operative University of Kenya (CUK) on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

The ceremony will take place at the university and is expected to be attended by President William Ruto and other senior government officials and dignitaries.

Dr. Chitunga is an experienced international civil servant and global development expert with a strong background in partnerships, concessional financing, and multilateral development across Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

He was appointed by President William Ruto for a five-year term, effective January 10, 2025, through Gazette Notice No. 387.

Currently, Dr. Chitunga serves as a Partnership Specialist with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) in Beijing, China. He previously worked at the African Development Bank in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, where he was responsible for managing partnerships and overseeing special donor funds, including the $5 billion Affirmative Finance Action for Women in Africa initiative.

Dr. Chitunga is also a fellow of the European University Institute’s School of Transnational Governance in Italy. He holds a PhD in Management from the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, an MBA from UGSM Monarch Business School in Switzerland, and additional postgraduate qualifications from universities in Italy and the United Kingdom.

In a statement, the university expressed its congratulations: “The University Council, Senate, Management Board, Staff, and Students take this opportunity to congratulate Dr. Chitunga on his appointment and wish him the very best as he embarks on this critical role of leading CUK to greater heights.”
