Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have arrested two women in Nairobi after they were found with counterfeit US currency worth about Sh70 million.

According to the DCI, officers from the Nairobi regional office acted on intelligence and mounted a well-coordinated operation in Upper Hill, where the suspects, identified as Ifrah Ali Jeyte and Qamar Salat Abdi, were apprehended.

“A swift search revealed numerous bundles of 100 USD denomination notes cleverly concealed in a handbag,” DCI said in a statement.

The suspects were taken to the DCI Nairobi Area Headquarters, where officers counted the fake money. The total was found to be $560,000, equivalent to approximately Sh70 million.

Cases of counterfeit money continue to surface in Nairobi.

Earlier this month, police arrested seven people suspected of making fake US dollars during a raid in Ngara.

Officers from the Central Police Station, acting on intelligence, stormed Travellers House where they found 36 bundles of counterfeit US currency, two plastic replicas resembling dollar notes, black paper resembling currency, and other materials believed to be used in the illegal trade.

The suspects included Manyara Aroon Nicas, a Tanzanian national, and Abbott Antony, a Congolese national, alongside four Kenyans — Mongele Wambura, James Ngugi, Justus Alubokho Opulu, and Mary Mumbi.
