Family demands justice over claims of assault by chiefs

The family of a police officer killed by bandits in Laikipia is demanding the arrest and prosecution of two chiefs in Etago Sub-County, Kisii County, over alleged assault and destruction of property during his burial.

At Ruora Village, Moticho Ward, Etago Sub-County, James Mogoi, the father of the late Douglas Mogoi lamented his painful journey to secure justice amid alleged sabotage from those in authority.

Douglas, the police officer, died while undergoing treatment at the Nanyuki Referral Hospital after he was shot by bandits at a camp in Laikipia North Sub-County.

According to Mogoi, the confrontation began when he disagreed with the area administrators over the burial site for his son, prompting attacks allegedly led by two local chiefs — Charles Omwono of Getenga Location and Shem Ayienda of Otendo Location — together with members of the public.

A medical report from Etago Sub-County Hospital confirmed that Mogoi sustained injuries to his left lower limb after being kicked during the scuffle.

A separate property valuation conducted by valuer Duncan Njiri indicated that items worth Sh326,400 were destroyed by members of the public allegedly incited by the chiefs.

Mogoi lamented that despite reporting the matter to relevant authorities, no action has been taken more than a year later.

His daughter, Abigael Mogoi, said the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) had recommended that the chiefs be arrested and charged in court, but no arrests have been made to date.

“We are pleading with the government to help us get justice and ensure the chiefs are brought to book,” Abigael said.

There was no immediate comment from the administrators over the claims.
