John Roberts is the 17th Chief Justice of the United States, serving in that role since 2005.

Born John Glover Roberts Jr. on January 27, 1955, in Buffalo, New York, he is widely recognized as a prominent figure in American jurisprudence, known for his institutionalist approach and occasional role as a swing vote on the Supreme Court.

    Siblings

John grew up as the only son in a family of four children born to John Glover “Jack” Roberts Sr., an executive at Bethlehem Steel, and Rosemary Podrasky Roberts.

He had three sisters, an older sister named Kathy, who passed away in 2021, and two younger sisters, Margaret and Barbara.

The family relocated from New York to Long Beach, Indiana, during his childhood, where he was raised alongside his siblings in a devout Catholic household.

    Career

Roberts pursued an exceptional academic path, graduating summa cum laude from Harvard College in 1976 with a degree in history and then earning his J.D. from Harvard Law School in 1979, where he served as managing editor of the Harvard Law Review.

Early in his career, he clerked for Judge Henry Friendly on the Second Circuit Court of Appeals and later for then-Associate Justice William Rehnquist at the Supreme Court.

He worked in private practice at the firm Hogan & Hartson before entering public service during the Reagan administration as an associate counsel to the president and later as principal deputy solicitor general under President George H.W. Bush.

After returning to private practice, President George W. Bush nominated him to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals in 2003, where he served briefly before his elevation to the Supreme Court.

In 2005, following the death of Chief Justice Rehnquist, Bush nominated Roberts as Chief Justice, and the Senate confirmed him, making him one of the youngest individuals to hold the position in over a century.

As Chief Justice, he has presided over landmark cases involving healthcare, voting rights, abortion, and executive power, often emphasizing judicial restraint while steering the Court’s direction on key issues.

    Accolades

Robert’s academic honors include graduating at the top of his class at Harvard Law School and his leadership on the Harvard Law Review.

He has been praised for his collegial leadership on the Supreme Court, fostering consensus where possible and maintaining the institution’s integrity amid polarized times.

Legal scholars and observers frequently highlight his influence in shaping modern conservative jurisprudence while occasionally crossing ideological lines in decisions such as upholding the Affordable Care Act.
