Early Life
Tony Danza was born Antonio Salvatore Iadanza on April 21, 1951, in Brooklyn, New York City. He was raised in a working-class Italian-American family and spent part of his youth in East New York before moving to Long Island at age 14.
Although he has described himself as a “bad student” in high school, Danza graduated in 1968. He later attended the University of Dubuque on a wrestling scholarship and earned a bachelor’s degree in history in 1972.
Boxing Career
Before becoming an actor, Danza pursued professional boxing. Despite a short career, he compiled an impressive record of nine wins and three losses, with all nine wins coming by knockout (including three technical knockouts). Nearly every fight he participated in ended in a knockout, either for or against him.
His time in the boxing gym would ultimately change his life. A television producer spotted him training and encouraged him to audition for a role that would launch his acting career.

Breakthrough in Television
Danza’s big break came when he landed the role of Tony Banta, a cab driver and part-time boxer, on Taxi (1978–1983). The series became a critical and commercial success and introduced him to a national audience.
He reached even greater fame with Who’s the Boss? (1984–1992), where he played Tony Micelli, a former professional baseball player turned housekeeper. The show consistently ranked in the top 10 in television ratings during its run and became one of the defining sitcoms of the 1980s.
In 1988, Danza received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in recognition of his television success.
Film
In addition to his sitcom fame, Danza has appeared in several films, including:
- The Hollywood Knights
- Going Ape!
- Angels in the Outfield
He later starred in and hosted several television projects, including The Tony Danza Show and the legal drama Family Law, and made guest appearances on series such as The Practice, earning an Emmy nomination.
In 2018, he starred in the Netflix series The Good Cop, though it was canceled after one season.
Broadway
Danza has also enjoyed a successful stage career. He appeared in the Broadway revival of The Iceman Cometh in 1999 to strong reviews. He later performed in Broadway productions of The Producers and Honeymoon in Vegas.
His work on stage helped diversify his income and establish him as a serious performer beyond sitcom television.
Teaching and Writing
In a surprising career move, Danza spent a year teaching 10th-grade English at Northeast High School in Philadelphia. His experience was documented in the A&E reality series Teach: Tony Danza.
He later wrote a memoir about the experience titled I’d Like to Apologize to Every Teacher I Ever Had: My Year as a Rookie Teacher at Northeast High, adding author royalties to his income stream.
Real Estate Investments
Real estate has also contributed to Danza’s overall wealth:
- In 1987, he purchased a Malibu beachfront home for $1.15 million and later sold it in 2014 for $8 million.
- He owned a custom-built Sherman Oaks property originally purchased from actor Robert Urich in 1986. The home was destroyed in the Northridge earthquake and rebuilt with luxury features before being listed for sale.
- In 2005, he purchased a Manhattan condo in the Millennium Tower for $1.7 million.
These property transactions significantly increased his long-term net worth.
