    Travis Sanheim is a Canadian professional ice hockey player who serves as a defenseman and alternate captain for the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League.

    Born on March 29, 1996, in Elkhorn, Manitoba, he has developed into a reliable, minute-eating blueliner known for his size, skating ability, offensive contributions from the back end, and steady two-way play.

    Sanheim was selected by the Flyers in the first round, 17th overall, of the 2014 NHL Entry Draft and made his NHL debut in 2017.

    He has spent his entire professional career with the Flyers organization, emerging as a top-pair defenseman and team leader while logging heavy ice time.

    Travis grew up on a 1,500-acre grain farm outside Elkhorn, Manitoba, alongside his fraternal twin brother Taylor and two older sisters, Kali and Shondalee.

    Travis and Taylor were especially close, sharing a passion for hockey and playing together from minor hockey through their junior careers with the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League.

    Taylor, a forward, often supported his brother’s path, stepping into leadership roles like alternate captain with the Hitmen when Travis was away representing Canada internationally.

    Career

    Sanheim’s hockey journey began in the small town of Elkhorn, where he and his twin brother played minor hockey with the Yellowhead Chiefs.

    He transitioned to the WHL with the Calgary Hitmen, developing into a top prospect with strong offensive numbers from the blue line.

    After being drafted by the Flyers, he spent time in the American Hockey League with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms before earning a full-time NHL roster spot in the 2017-18 season.

    Over his NHL career, Sanheim has become a cornerstone of the Flyers’ defense, known for logging top minutes and contributing offensively.

    He has played in over 650 regular-season games, recording more than 250 points, with standout seasons including a career-high 44 points in 2023-24.

    Sanheim signed an eight-year contract extension with Philadelphia in 2022, underscoring his importance to the franchise.

    He has also represented Canada on the international stage, earning recognition at junior tournaments and contributing to senior-level success, including a silver medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

    Accolades

    Sanheim has won the team’s Barry Ashbee Trophy as the most outstanding defenseman on four occasions, including consecutive wins in recent seasons and recognition for his all-around play and heavy workload.

    In 2024-25, he also received the Yanick Dupre Class Guy Memorial Award for exemplifying character, dignity, and respect both on and off the ice.

    At the junior level, Sanheim was named the best defenseman at the 2014 IIHF World U18 Championship, where he led all blueliners in points and helped Canada capture bronze while being named one of the team’s top three players.

    He has been selected to the WHL East First All-Star Team and has earned international accolades, including his contribution to Canada’s silver medal at the 2026 Olympics.
