Detectives in Mtito Andei, Makueni County, have arrested three suspects allegedly linked to a highway robbery attempt along the Mombasa-Nairobi highway in which one of their accomplices was fatally shot.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the arrests followed sustained investigations and intelligence-led operations conducted nearly three months after the incident.

The robbery attempt occurred on May 6, 2026, near the Mutomo area in Mtito Andei, when a gang riding a motorcycle allegedly staged a fake roadside emergency to force a transit driver to stop.

The suspects reportedly attempted to hijack the driver’s Subaru Impreza at gunpoint.

However, the plan turned fatal when a struggle broke out between the attackers and the driver, causing the gang’s firearm to discharge.

One of the attackers, identified as Gift Musau, was fatally shot during the confrontation, while his accomplices fled the scene on a motorcycle, leaving his body behind.

According to the DCI, detectives continued pursuing the suspects despite their escape.

On Friday, August 21, 2026, detectives based in Mtito Andei traced and arrested two suspects from their hideout in Kinyambu.

The suspects were identified as Alex Mueti Kasina and Stephen Kalungo Joel.

The following day, detectives arrested a third suspect, Jamlick Muli Muasa, alias Star, at his shop in Kinyambu.

A search of his premises led to the recovery of two mobile phones. Detectives also searched his residence in Maikuu, Kinyambu, where they recovered several identity cards and driving licences bearing different names, among other items.

The three suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, August 24, 2026, to face charges including murder, attempted robbery with violence and possession of ammunition without a licence.

Investigations into the robbery network are ongoing.

“The DCI remains relentless in pursuing criminals and dismantling networks that prey on innocent Kenyans and other road users,” the DCI said.
