The government has announced progress in the construction of the Sh2.5 billion Dhogoye Bridge in Usenge, Siaya County, saying the project will improve transport connectivity and boost trade between Siaya and Busia counties once completed.

Principal Secretary for the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo said the government remains committed to investing in critical transport infrastructure to enhance connectivity, unlock economic opportunities and support regional development.

Speaking during an update on the project, Omollo said the Dhogoye Bridge, being implemented by the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA), is a strategic infrastructure project aimed at restoring a vital transport link along the Bondo–Usenge–Osieko corridor.

For years, residents in the area have faced frequent transport disruptions after rising water levels in Lake Victoria repeatedly submerged the crossing point, cutting off access to markets, schools, health facilities and other essential services.

Construction of the bridge began in 2021 but stalled for an extended period before works resumed. Omollo said the project has recorded significant progress since construction restarted four months ago.

Once completed, the bridge will provide an all-weather crossing, facilitate the movement of people and goods, enhance regional trade and strengthen social and economic integration between communities in Siaya and Busia counties.

Omollo said the State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has played a key role in ensuring the project’s successful implementation by coordinating government agencies, local leaders and communities.

“The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration has been instrumental in sustaining momentum on the project by fostering collaboration between government agencies, local leaders and communities, helping to resolve operational challenges and ensuring a conducive environment for continuous implementation of this long-awaited infrastructure investment,” he said.

The government expects the Sh2.5 billion project to improve accessibility, stimulate economic activity and enhance livelihoods for communities living around the Lake Victoria basin.

The 200-metre bridge comprises five spans of 40 metres each. The foundation, consisting of deep piles, have been drilled and completed, while the superstructure features steel beams (plate girders) have also been transported to site.

Located along the Kisian – Usenge – Osieko (B10) Road in Siaya County, the Bridge is a key infrastructure project expected to enhance economic opportunities in fishing, tourism, and agriculture.

Upon completion, the Bridge is expected to further boost local trade and create employment across the wider Lake Victoria region.

The Project also includes the construction of approximately 3.6 kilometres of approach roads on both sides to bitumen standards, ensuring seamless connectivity to the Bridge.
