Kenya Footballers Welfare Association, Kefwa, has written to the Cabinet Secretary for Sports Rashid Echesa asking that he clears pending wages of other players in leagues across the country.

Kefwa are after equality following a recent gesture by the ministry of sports, through the CS, to bailout cash strapped AFC Leopards by clearing accrued allowances of their players amounting to Ksh 2million.

In a letter to the CS, Kefwa General Secretary Jerry Santo stated that, “We took great interest in the kind gesture demonstrated by our Cabinet Secretary Hon. Richard Echesa’s move to cause the government to bail out the playing unit of cash strapped AFC Leopards by paying their wage arrears to the tune of Ksh2 million on Thursday February 14, 2019.

“Kefwa therefore thanks and welcomes the government’s initiative to help cater for the welfare and development of players contracted to one of Kenya’s most popular and successful football clubs.”

However, in a show of equality and affection for the Kenyan player irrespective of his club affiliation, we hope and urge the cabinet secretary to extend this gesture to the rest of the players contracted to Kenyan football clubs across the country,” read the statement.

According to Kefwa, they have “compiled a list of over 100 professional footballers whose wages have gone unpaid for a period exceeding 3 months. The situation is getting out of hand as we write as some of the players face the day wary of how or where to source their meals for the day.”

Kefwa also wants the ministry to sort allowances of the national women’s team, the Harambee Starlets.
