Aaron Ekblad is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenseman and alternate captain for the Florida Panthers in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Born on February 7, 1996, in Windsor, Ontario, he stands 6’4″ and weighs around 220 pounds.

Ekblad was selected first overall by the Panthers in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft after a standout junior career with the Barrie Colts of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL), where he was also taken first overall in the 2011 OHL draft.

He quickly established himself as one of the league’s top young defensemen and has become a cornerstone of the Panthers’ franchise.

    Siblings

Aaron’s brother Darien Ekblad, an older sibling, played as a goaltender and was drafted by the London Knights in the OHL.

Darien pursued a hockey path of his own before retiring.

Another brother, Even, has drawn public attention for looking remarkably similar to Aaron, leading to humorous mix-ups in fan and media encounters.

    Career

Ekblad made an immediate impact upon entering the NHL, debuting in the 2014-15 season.

He earned a selection to the 2015 NHL All-Star Game and won the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie, a rare feat for a defenseman.

His strong two-way play, size, and skating ability helped anchor the Panthers’ blue line from the start.

Over more than a decade with the Panthers, Ekblad has developed into a reliable veteran leader.

He has played in over 800 regular-season games, contributing steady offense from the back end alongside elite defensive play.

Injuries have occasionally sidelined him, but he has consistently rebounded.

His tenure culminated in major team success as the Panthers reached and won the Stanley Cup in 2024, with Ekblad playing a key role as a long-tenured player.

The team repeated as champions in 2025, further cementing his legacy with the franchise.

Prior to the NHL, Ekblad excelled in the OHL with the Barrie Colts, earning awards such as the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the league’s outstanding defenseman.

He has also represented Canada internationally, including at the World Championships.

    Accolades

Ekblad won the Calder Memorial Trophy in 2015 as the NHL’s Rookie of the Year and was named to the NHL All-Rookie Team that same season.

He has been selected to the NHL All-Star Game multiple times.

At the junior level, he captured the Max Kaminsky Trophy and OHL First All-Star Team honors.

With the Panthers, his ultimate achievements are the back-to-back Stanley Cup championships in 2024 and 2025, making him one of the franchise’s most decorated players.

He continues to rank among the league’s top defensemen in terms of longevity and impact with his original drafting team.
