At least six people were killed following a road accident involving a passenger bus and a matatu at Katumani along the Nairobi–Mombasa Road in Machakos County.

According to the police, seven other passengers sustained critical injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level Five Hospital, where they are currently receiving specialised medical treatment.

Police said the multi-vehicle accident along Mombasa Road at the Konza City area involving a shuttle headed to Loitoktok, a lorry, and a bus from Mombasa happened at about 11 pm on January 2, 2026.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary while the wreckage was moved to the local police station. Police said they are investigating the accident.

Machakos governor Wavinya Ndeti said emergency response teams from Muumandu and Kyumbi were promptly dispatched to the scene to conduct rescue and evacuation operations.

“Six passengers were confirmed dead at the scene. Additionally, seven critically injured victims were evacuated and are currently receiving specialised medical care at Machakos Level 5 Hospital,” she said in a statement.

She added rescue operations at the scene were completed, and relevant authorities are managing traffic and conducting investigations to establish the cause of the accident.

“We urge all motorists to exercise caution on the roads as schools reopen for Term One, with increased traffic expected.”

The incident came amid concerns of new accidents in the New Year.

Police said 16 people were killed in separate road accidents in the country on New Year’s Day.

According to the police, the victims included eight pedestrians, six riders, a passenger and a pillion passenger.

The accidents also left 33 people with serious injuries and they included 15 passengers, six riders and six pillion passengers and five passengers.

The injured are nursing wounds in the hospital. Police said the accidents are many and causing pain to many families. The families are left managing bills.
