Gunmen believed to be part of the al-Shabaab militant group on Monday night attacked Omar Jillo location, Lafey Sub County in Mandera East, where they killed a chief and abducted two Kenya Police Reservists. Armed attackers attempted to kidnap ODM Director of Communications Philip Etale las night in Nairobi’s Central Business District. According to eye witnesses, Philip was from a popular eatery, Ranalo Foods, when men in a saloon car blocked his path while he was crossing the road and attempted to kidnap him before speeding off when the plan failed. The disgraced Nation Media Group has finally bowed to public pressure and sacked its Kisumu bureau chief. This was after some NMG staffers accused Emeka Mayaka of raping them and/or demanding sex through coercion. The editor, Emeka Mayaka, was reportedly sacked on Tuesday 18th April after investigations were carried out. The investigations revealed that the claims of the women were true. The replacement for Emeka Mayaka is Dave Opiyo who has already been dispatched to Kisumu. Emeka is known to be a close association of Editorial Chief Tom Mshindi.

The US government believes that leading global mobile money service like M-Pesa are encouraging cross border criminals to use the platforms without proper checks. The US Department of State report (pdf, pg.116) indicates that the mobile money services have impacted on the lives of citizens positively but allowing the cross border transfer without strict checks, is allowing the money launderers” to operate their trade within the region unhindered.
