An investigation by the British army has found that some soldiers stationed at a controversial base in Kenya continue to use sex workers despite being banned from doing so. Soldiers at the British Army Training Unit Kenya (Batuk) used sex workers “at a low or moderate” level, a report said, adding that more work was needed to stamp out the practice. The investigation covered a period of more than two years, examining conduct at the base dating back to July 2022. It was commissioned following an investigation by British media outlet ITV into the behaviour of soldiers at Batuk, including…

The Government has put in place enough mechanisms to ensure that Kenya is not in breach of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) rules during the ongoing African Nations Championships (CHAN), Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has said. Speaking in Nakuru during his 28th Jukwaa La Usalama tour, Murkomen said the National Police Service has prepared enough officers to enforce the penalty already meted out for limiting the numbers at Kasarani to 27,000. “Fans are a very important part of the game. But I’d like to implore Kenyans to go to the stadium only if they have tickets,” the CS…
At least 40 people have been killed in an attack on a camp for displaced people in Sudan’s western Darfur region, according to an aid group that works there. The Abu Shouk Emergency Response Room said Monday’s assault was carried out by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The resistance committee in nearby el-Fasher city, made up of local citizens and activists, also reported this. El-Fasher, which came under intense attack as well, is the last major foothold in Darfur for the army and its allies, which have been fighting the paramilitary RSF in the two-year civil war. The conflict has…
US inflation held steady in July as lower energy costs offset price rises for coffee and tools. The latest official figures showed consumer prices rose 2.7% in the year to July but underlying figures – which are seen as a better indicator of economic trends – show that inflation ticked up to the highest level since February. Investors are watching inflation data to see whether US tariffs on global imports are feeding through into prices. The US Federal Reserve has, so far, held interest rates as it assesses whether inflation will rise because of the levies despite pressure by President…
Roofing on industrial buildings faces several unique challenges. This structure is designed to be purely functional and is often based on the manufacturing process that goes on inside the building. The roof can suffer damage due to aging, poor installation, degradation of materials, weather events or other accidents. Business owners and property managers have to attend to industrial roofing problems immediately. They will have to decide whether to repair, restore, renovate or completely replace the structure. In some cases, the damage may be minimal, so it’s wise to fix it at once to prevent further more expensive and extensive problems.…

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has recovered public land in Kakamega valued at Ksh.20 million belonging to the Ministry of Housing. The parcel Block 111/100, measuring 0.9 hectares, was registered to Kakamega on December 28, 1974. The Commissioner of Lands then oversaw the sub-division of the land into three parcels in 1996 and one plot was leased for 99 years to the first defendant named Peter Alubale. In his ruling, Chief magistrate Philip Mutua held that the land was trust land reserved for civil servants’ housing and could not be allocated to private individuals. EACC argued that the issuance…
The Milimani Law Court rejected an application by businessman Honey Khatwani, a former director of Oki General Trading, seeking the release of his passport to facilitate travel to India, dealing a significant setback to his plans. Senior Principal Magistrate Dolphina Alego dismissed the request, ruling that Khatwani had failed to present sufficient justification for the release of his travel document, which is currently held in court as part of his bail conditions in a Sh356 million fraud case. Through his lawyer, Kennedy Echesa, Khatwani had urged the court to permit him to travel to India on Saturday, August 2, 2025,…
The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) announced it had revoked a Privately Initiated Proposal (PIP) to construct the Nairobi-Mombasa (Usahihi) expressway. The mega road project was to be constructed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, covering a 459-kilometer corridor from Mlolongo in Machakos County to Bonje in Mombasa County. KeNHA, however, noted that following evaluation of documents from the Contracting Authority, and the submission of the report to the PPP Committee, National Treasury & Economic Planning for approval, the proposal was found to have not met the relevant criteria and should be abandoned. The committee further directed the contractor to…
A US judge ruled grand jury materials in Ghislaine Maxwell’s sex-trafficking case will remain sealed, saying that making them public “would not reveal new information of any consequence”. The justice department had asked Judge Paul Engelmayer to unseal the documents, in an effort to assauge anger among President Donald Trump’s supporters over the decision not to release all federal files on Maxwell’s associate, deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Maxwell, currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for crimes tied to Epstein, opposed unsealing the materials. The judge wrote it was important to protect the secrecy of grand juries, who decide whether…
The UN’s human rights office condemned a targeted Israeli attack that killed six journalists in Gaza, calling it a grave breach of international law. Five Al Jazeera journalists, including correspondent Anas al-Sharif, were killed in an Israeli air strike on Sunday. Two others were killed, including a freelance journalist, the broadcaster said. Israel’s military said it targeted Sharif, alleging he had “served as the head of a terrorist cell in Hamas” – something Sharif denied. Israel provided little evidence. The BBC understands Sharif did some work with a Hamas media team in Gaza before the current conflict. In social media…
US President Donald Trump said he will try to get some territory back for Ukraine during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday. “Russia’s occupied a big portion of Ukraine. They occupied prime territory. We’re going to try to get some of that territory back for Ukraine,” he told a news conference. He and the Russian president are due to hold talks in Alaska at the end of the week. Trump claimed that he could know within two minutes of meeting Putin whether progress was possible. He said Friday would be a “feel-out meeting” aimed at urging Putin…
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have announced they are extending their deal for films and TV shows with Netflix. This has been described as a “multi-year, first look deal”, which would give Netflix a first option on proposals from Prince Harry and Meghan’s Archewell production company. It’s a looser arrangement than their previous deal – but it disproves claims that the Sussexes and Netflix are going to completely part company. Meghan said that she and Harry were inspired by the partnership with Netflix to “create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision”. It’s not…
Crane is a modern economic construction tool designed to improve material handling conditions, achieve automation of the production process, enable mechanization, and improve labor productivity. It is an indispensable piece of logistics and transportation equipment. In the crane family, there are many types, and each type has its own suitable place of use. When enterprises purchase lifting machinery, they must first consider comprehensively the scope of use of the enterprise, the frequency of work, the utilization rate, the rated lifting capacity, and other factors. Only by doing so can they select the appropriate unit that meets the work level requirements…
At least 2,933 people have been killed in accidents since January 2025, transport Cabinet Secretary Davis Chirchir said Monday. Thousands of others have been left with injuries following the accidents reported. He also said a team is auditing the accidents so far reported and will give the way forward. “Crash data indicates a total of 2,933 fatalities have been reported between January and August 10, 2025.” “Unfortunately, 80 occurred over the past four days,” he said. Chirchir said following the spike in crashes involving public service vehicles, private and commercial vehicles, officials drawn from various agencies are conducting safety audits…
