The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has raised alarm over an increase in non-type approved mobile phones in the country, warning that the devices pose health and safety risks to users.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, February 10, 2026, the regulator listed 21 mobile phone brands that have not been approved for use in Kenya.
The affected brands include TINSIK, BUNDY, X.ODA, REALFONE, QQMEE 16 SMBA, F+ 10 U-FM, Q-SEVEN, FONROX, CHATADA, UGBAD 5 MEZ, SUPERX, FT, NEMOJO, MOMOFLY, RAENO, and VUE, among others.
CA said the type approval process ensures all communication devices meet national and international standards on safety, health, and electromagnetic compatibility.
“The Authority ensures that all ICT devices comply with safety and health standards to protect consumers from hazardous products and prevent harmful interference with other electronic equipment,” CA said.
The regulator warned members of the public not to buy the listed phone brands, adding that vendors are prohibited from selling non-type approved devices.
CA advised consumers to buy mobile phones only from licensed dealers, whose details are available on the Authority’s website at www.ca.go.ke/licensee-register.
Buyers were also urged to confirm whether a phone is type approved by checking the approved equipment list on the CA website.
In addition, Kenyans can verify a phone’s authenticity by *dialling #06# to obtain the 15-digit IMEI number and sending it via SMS to 1555, or by using the IMEI checker on the CA website, free of charge.
