Camilla Andersen is a retired Danish professional team handball player, widely recognized as one of the greatest playmakers in the sport’s history.
Born Camilla Røseler Andersen on July 5, 1973, in Gentofte, she comes from a deeply handball-oriented family.
Her parents, Gert Andersen and Toni Røseler Andersen, both represented the Danish national team, and her maternal grandfather, Walter Røseler, also played for Denmark.
Andersen played primarily as a centre back or playmaker, known for her precise shots, calm demeanor under pressure, and exceptional ball-handling skills.
She amassed 194 caps for the Danish national team from 1992 to 2000, scoring a record 846 goals, the most in Danish women’s handball history, even over two decades after her retirement.
She retired from club play in 2005 at age 32 and later transitioned into business, co-founding a travel agency specializing in sports travel.
Siblings
Andersen’s siblings include a twin sister, Charlotte Andersen, and a younger brother, Kristian Røseler Andersen.
Charlotte also pursued handball, playing alongside Camilla at FIF and for the Danish youth national team, though her career was cut short by injury.
Kristian was a professional handball player for Virum-Sorgenfri HK, where he helped secure the Danish Championship in 1997; tragically, he passed away in 2019 at age 44, leaving behind his wife and daughter.

Career
Andersen’s career spanned multiple countries and clubs, beginning at Virum-Sorgenfri Håndboldklub in 1985 and evolving through stints at FIF, Nordstrand IF in Norway, Buxtehuder SV in Germany, Bækkelagets SK in Norway, and later Slagelse FH and FCK Håndbold in Denmark.
She debuted for the senior Danish national team in 1992 and became a key figure in the “iron ladies” era of Danish handball dominance.
Andersen was instrumental in numerous international successes before stepping away from the national team after the 2000 Olympics due to media pressures.
At the club level, she achieved significant triumphs, including the EHF Champions League title in 2004 with Slagelse FH, where she also won the Danish Championship in 2003 and multiple domestic cups.
Her club career included wins in the EHF Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup, as well as Norwegian titles during her time abroad.
Known for her leadership as a captain and playmaker, she retired from elite play in 2005 following a farewell match.
Accolades
Andersen is a two-time Olympic gold medalist, winning with Denmark at the 1996 Summer Olympics and the 2000 Summer Olympics.
She claimed World Championship gold in 1997 (with silver in 1993 and bronze in 1995) and European Championship gold in 1994 and 1996 (silver in 1998), earning All-Star Playmaker honors at the 1994 and 1998 Europeans and the 1997 Worlds.
Individually, she was named Danish Player of the Year in 2003, topped the Danish league scoring charts multiple seasons (1997-98, 1998-99, 1999-2000, 2001-02, 2002-03), and received EHF All-Star recognition as a playmaker.
Her club successes include the 2004 EHF Champions League, 2003 EHF Cup, 1994 Cup Winners’ Cup, 2003 Danish Championship, and various Danish and Norwegian cups.
In recognition of her contributions, she was inducted into the EHF Hall of Fame in 2023 and the Danish National Olympic Committee and Sports Confederation Hall of Fame in 2012.
