    Early Life

Chaka Khan was born Yvette Marie Stevens on March 23, 1953, in Chicago, Illinois. She grew up in a creative, bohemian household as the eldest of five children. Drawn to rhythm and blues at an early age, she formed her first girl group, The Crystalettes, at just 11 years old.

As a teenager, Khan became involved in civil rights activism and briefly joined the Black Panther Party, where she befriended activist Fred Hampton. At age 13, she was given the name Chaka Adunne Aduffe Hodarhi Karifi by a Yoruba Baba. By the late 1960s, she had left high school and begun performing professionally around Chicago.

    Breakthrough With Rufus

Chaka Khan rose to prominence in the early 1970s as the lead vocalist of the funk and R&B band Rufus. The group caught national attention after signing with ABC Records and quickly developed a signature sound driven by Khan’s powerhouse vocals.

Their breakthrough came in 1974 when Stevie Wonder wrote “Tell Me Something Good,” which sold more than one million copies and earned Rufus a Grammy Award. Throughout the decade, Rufus released multiple hit albums and amassed eight platinum records, becoming one of the most successful R&B acts of the era.

Despite the group’s success, Khan’s growing star power set the stage for a solo career.

    Solo Career

In 1978, Chaka Khan launched her solo career with her self-titled debut album, featuring the smash hit “I’m Every Woman.” The song topped the charts, sold over one million copies, and became her signature anthem.

Throughout the early 1980s, Khan released a steady stream of successful albums, earning both commercial success and critical acclaim. Her artistic peak came in 1984 with the release of “I Feel for You.” The album’s title track—originally written by Prince—became a massive crossover hit, topping R&B charts in the U.S. and U.K. and selling over one million copies.

Other standout tracks from the album included “Through the Fire” and “This Is My Night,” cementing Khan’s place as a global superstar.
