Chelsea FC has confirmed the death of its former managing director Colin Hutchinson.
In a statement issued on Monday, April 13, 2026, the club said Hutchinson played a key role in shaping the sporting side of the team for more than a decade.
Hutchinson was instrumental in Chelsea’s revival in the 1990s, helping the club return to winning trophies after more than 25 years without major success. He also contributed to the team qualifying for the UEFA Champions League for the first time.
The club noted that Hutchinson was quick to take advantage of changes in transfer rules, which allowed Chelsea to sign top international players. His work helped attract global stars to west London, strengthening the team as the English Premier League entered a new era.
Hutchinson joined Chelsea in 1987 from Wimbledon FC after being recruited by then chairman Ken Bates to lead the “Save the Bridge” campaign. The initiative aimed to protect Stamford Bridge from property developers.
He later rose to become managing director, taking charge of daily football operations, including player transfers, while Bates focused on broader developments such as the Chelsea Village project.
Working alongside Bates, manager Glenn Hoddle and director Matthew Harding, Hutchinson helped develop a strategy that transformed the club. This approach led to high-profile signings, including Ruud Gullit, Gianluca Vialli, Gianfranco Zola and Marcel Desailly.
He was also involved in key managerial decisions, including appointing Vialli as player-manager and later replacing him with Claudio Ranieri.
During his time at the club, Chelsea won the FA Cup in 1997 and 2000, as well as the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, UEFA Super Cup and the League Cup.
Hutchinson was known for his sharp wit and once described Chelsea as “a continental side playing football in England” after the club fielded the Premier League’s first all-foreign starting lineup in 1999.
He left Chelsea in 2002, having overseen a period in which the club became significantly stronger on the pitch.
“We send our deepest condolences to Colin’s family and friends,” the club said in its statement.
