DCI Boss Mohammed Amin Calls For Unity In Fight Against Transnational Crime

Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mohammed Amin has urged African countries to unite in the fight against transnational organised crime.

Speaking at the 27th INTERPOL African Regional Conference in Cape Town, Mr. Amin said financial crimes have devastating effects on economies and ordinary citizens.

“When money is stolen through corruption or fraud, it’s not just figures on a spreadsheet, it’s schools not built, medicines not bought, and dreams denied,” he said.

The three-day conference, which began on August 27, 2025, has brought together security leaders from across the continent under the theme: “Leveraging Cooperation, Innovation, and Partnerships to Fight Transnational Organised Crime.”

Amin outlined Kenya’s experience, noting that the country faces unique challenges due to its strategic position as a regional trade hub and its rapidly expanding digital economy. He said Kenya has introduced reforms such as amendments to the Conflict-of-Interest Act, enhanced coordination frameworks, improved case management systems, prioritisation of financial investigations, and increased use of financial intelligence from partners like INTERPOL.

He also shared best practices Kenya has adopted in fighting financial crimes, including capacity building, cross-border investigations, specialised investigative techniques, prosecution-guided cases, and legislative reforms.

The DCI boss highlighted Kenya’s achievements such as landmark convictions, dismantling criminal networks, major narcotics and firearms seizures, confiscation of illicit properties, and stronger cooperation with the private sector and foreign authorities.

“No single country or institution can win this battle alone. We must continue to build strong, cross-border partnerships and trust within our regional and global justice systems,” Mr. Amin said.

The conference will conclude on August 29, with delegates expected to come up with new strategies to strengthen cooperation in tackling organised crime.
