    Siblings

D’Wayne had a notable family connection in music through his younger half-brother, Charles Ray Wiggins, who later became widely known by his stage name Raphael Saadiq.

Raphael Saadiq achieved significant success as a singer, bassist, songwriter, and producer, often highlighted in tributes following D’Wayne’s passing.

    Career

Wiggins began his professional music journey in the 1980s, initially working as a guitarist and contributing to tours and recordings.

He and his half-brother Raphael Saadiq, along with their cousin Timothy Christian Riley, formed Tony! Toni! Toné! in 1986 after returning to Oakland from working with singer Sheena Easton on Prince’s Parade Tour.

The group blended classic soul, funk, and new jack swing, releasing four albums that achieved commercial success: one gold, two platinum, and one double platinum certification.

They produced 14 Billboard-charting R&B singles, including five number-one hits and three Top Ten pop singles, with standout tracks such as “Feels Good,” “Anniversary,” “It Never Rains (In Southern California),” and “(Lay Your Head on My) Pillow.”

The band sold over six million albums worldwide during their peak years.

After the original lineup disbanded in 1997 due to financial issues, miscommunication, and creative differences, Wiggins and Riley continued touring under the Tony! Toni! Toné! name until 2018, with Amar Khalil handling lead vocals.

The full original trio reunited in 2023 for a short tour.

Beyond the group, Wiggins established himself as a producer and mentor.

He co-produced tracks on Alicia Keys’ 2003 album The Diary of Alicia Keys, including “Diary” and “If I Was Your Woman,” where he also performed sitar.

He opened the House of Music recording studio in West Oakland and supported emerging artists like Beyoncé, Keyshia Cole, Kehlani, and Zendaya in their early careers.

Wiggins also produced for Bay Area rappers such as Too Short (including the documentary Life Is), San Quinn, The Coup, and Messy Marv, while running the Jahva House cafe in Oakland.

    Accolades

As a producer on Alicia Keys’ The Diary of Alicia Keys, Wiggins won a Grammy Award in 2005, with the album achieving platinum status and securing multiple Grammys overall.

Tony! Toni! Toné! received widespread acclaim for their innovative sound, amassing three platinum albums, over six million in sales, and numerous chart-topping singles that defined an era of R&B.

Wiggins was celebrated as an award-winning guitarist, songwriter, and producer whose work influenced generations.
