Renowned gynecologist and Nairobi Hospital Board member Job Obwaka died of cardiac arrest, a postmortem on his body showed.
The autopsy conducted on Tuesday at the Lee Funeral Home established that cardiac arrest was the immediate cause of death.
His family and police were present.
The cardiac arrest is linked to a heart condition, a family representative said.
The family representative Joseph Ndungu confirmed the results, noting that while the cause has been determined, further examinations will still be undertaken to provide more clarity on what led to the fatal episode.
“However, a toxicology report is still being conducted to determine the exact cause,” Ndungu said.
Ndungu said the family was in agreement with the findings of the examination.
Obwaka died on May 1, 2026, after being rushed to The Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police had informed the court that they are probing a possible poisoning in the death of an 83-year-old medic.
Police are investigating a possible case of suspected poisoning in the death of the veteran obstetrician and gynaecologist and ex-chairman of the Board of Directors at Nairobi Hospital.
An affidavit filed in court by Sergeant Rhoda Nzioka from the DCI headquarters indicated that samples collected from the house of a woman who was in the company of Dr Obwaka during his final moments will be sent to the government chemist for toxicological analysis.
The woman, Beatrice Wangari, will however remain in custody for 10 days to allow police to complete their investigations.
“There are certain samples that are to be forwarded to the government analyst, and possibly as a result of two tests or examinations, maybe subsequently a mental assessment examination,” the prosecutor said.
In an affidavit, the investigating officer pointed out that samples were collected from Wangari’s residence in Milimani Estate that would prove instrumental in the whole investigation for eventual forensic testing.
Wangari’s defence team dismissed the allegations, arguing that police had already searched the premises and recovered no evidence to support claims of poisoning, thus collecting food samples would be an overreach.
Nzioka allege that Wangari picked him up from a shopping mall in the area before taking him to her home.
The two are said to have shared a meal before the doctor retired to the bedroom, where Wangari later joined him.
Shortly afterward, the doctor reportedly developed complications and became unresponsive.
Wangari is said to have sought assistance from a neighbor, who found the man lying on a bed.
Emergency responders were called to the scene and rushed him to Nairobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
A search conducted at Wangari’s residence led to the recovery of several items, including used utensils, assorted medication, bedding, and partially consumed bottles of wine.
The items have been submitted for forensic analysis.
The incident was formally recorded at Kilimani Police Station.
Samples are expected to be forwarded to the Government Chemist for toxicological testing.
In seeking extended detention, the DCI argued that investigators required more time to complete inquiries, including awaiting post-mortem and toxicology results.
They also told the court that the case has attracted public attention and strong reactions, raising concerns over the suspect’s safety if released at this stage.
